Bi-energy systems with heat pump

Bi-energy systems, where the electrical part is made up of a heat pump, show certain common characteristics.  A large capacity heat pump can, in general, provide heat without assistance up to an outside temperature of a few degrees under the freezing point.  This outside temperature is called “thermal balance” of the heat pump.  A bi-energy system made up of an air-to-air heat pump normally works as follows:

•when the outside temperature is higher than the thermal balance, the heat pump works on its own to provide the necessary heat.

bie
•when the outside temperature drops down to or below the thermal balance, the heat pump must work with another source of energy.

•when the outside temperature drops down to the normal exchange  temperature of the system (-12C or -15C) the operation of the heat pump is blocked and the auxiliary heating system operates on its own.

Geothermal heating and air conditioning advantages

Savings

* Up to 65% to 70% energy savings compared with conventional heating, 35% savings on hot water and 50% savings on air conditioning.

Comfort

* Provides better quality air from a uniform heat source

Reliability

* The complete unit is installed indoors, therefore lengthening your system’s life-cycle  by 25 years or more.

Environment

* Clean and renewable energy source.
* The geothermal system does not emit CO2, one of the main components of air pollution.

Security

* No flames or smoke
* No danger of vandalism as the system is installed indoors.

Additional Benefits

* Increases the resale value of your home.
* Saves you money on your investment  in the very first year.
* Reduces significantly your energy bill, maintenance costs related to your heating system, and house insurance.
* Excellent choice to complement your existing radiant heating system.

How it works:

There exist under us an inexhaustible supply of energy that can be exploited freely.  The ground has a permanent temperature of approximately 9C all year round.  Using this heat source, the geothermal heat pump allows you to heat and air–condition your residence in a secure manner all year.

Vertical loop

Vertical loops are made from two length of HDPE pipes “shaped into a U” that are buried in holes dug into the ground.  These holes are between 15 and 100m deep and have a circumference of 10 to 12cm. Once the pipes are in place, the holes are filled with clay grout.

Horizontal loop

As their name imply these loops are buried horizontally, usually to a depth of 2 to 2.5m even though they could vary from 1.5 to 3m or more.  Trenches are usually dug with a backhoe.  A caterpillar can also be used depending on the  ground composition.

Pond loop

These two loops can be installed on a property near a lake or a pond that is open to the sun’s energy throughout the entire summer.   All you need is water with depth of 2 to 2.5m all year long,  which can protect the loop from waves and ice build-up.
